Chevrolet Bel Air - 1958

Benito ... from Havana

It has always been Julio’s biggest passion to breathe new life into Chevrolets, manufactured in each year between 1955 and 1960. A Bel Air from 1958 was still missing, until the day he drove to San Antonio de los Baños, just before Christmas 2015.

There he was with the color of champagne. The owner, a jovial man, had a farm where he cultivated flowers. Weekend after weekend Julio and Nidialys drove to San Antonio. Loaded with flowers, they returned home every Sunday, but it didn't come to a deal. They became friends with the whole family. Finally, the flower farmer saw that his car would be in good hands, and closed the sale.

In our garage annex ‘beauty salon’ he got his original appearance back. We painted him Madonna blue, true to the original design and hardly distinguishable from a new car. The engine, a Chevrolet 235, the steering, the suspension, the transmission, the upholstery, everything is original. The only exception is the air conditioning, not a superfluous luxury given the subtropical climate of Cuba.

We call him Benito, in memory of Julio's father. The driver is Ivan, Julio’s brother. The first ride after the rebirth of the 1958 Chevrolet was to the farm to show the result. The flower farmer, normally a talkative person, was speechless for a long time.
