Fiat 500 Giardiniera

Dolce ... from Rome

‘Fiat 500, the big little myth’ is the title of Alessandro Sannia's book. It is an ode to the legendary 500 series of the Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino founded in 1899. A must for mechanics, a song of praise for the enthusiasts.

It was 1957 when the Fiat 500 Nuova appeared on the market as a successor to the popular Topolino. Meaning ‘little mouse’. The Topolino may have been the smallest of its pre-and post-war competitors, but still, a colossal beast compared to the first Cinquecento, a tiny car of barely 3 meters.

A top hit in Italy and far beyond.

With 13 HP tough enough, efficient in the busy city center, compact, usable, affordable, the ‘cute’ design of Dante Giacosa. Bull’s eyes in the hearts of the common people. Cupid strikes again. A top hit in Italy and far beyond. Workers' emancipation in the fifties, hip in the sixties, nostalgic today and endearing until the ages of the ages.

Fiat 500 Giardiniera

It is 1969. As one of the last of its kind, this Fiat 500 Giardiniera rolls out of the factory, no less than 18 HP, engine tilted in the back. She shines. Built as a station wagon and perfectly suited for ‘la dolce vita’. More luxury, more seats, more space, more windows, more views, more comfort, more fun. Heavenly is the extended canvas 'sunroof', to be closed when rain falls and opened when the sun or stars shine.

The rear-hinged front doors, so-called ‘suicide doors'. Also, the charm of the 500 remained. The cozy feeling of being out together.

Added is the technology that Fiat has developed so extensively after 70 years, although dosed in such a way to remain the purchase affordable for the ordinary family, for the baker, for the carpenter or for the farmer’s wife, bringing her fresh vegetables from a nearby village to the city’s market; la Giardiniera.

Rarely seen

Rarely you see them riding; fit, blushing Giardinieras. Rarely you see them as beautiful as this one. Today, still shining as its first shine. This ‘big little myth’ feels nowhere more at home than in Rome; old, young, mythical city.
Rome becomes more beautiful when she passes by.
Rome is seen even more beautiful through the windows of this Giardiniera.

Your driver and guide in good times is a gentleman, a sixties fan. He knows his classics, he knows the quays of the Tevere, the narrow streets, beyond the tourist part. He knows the ways leading to the beating heart of Rome.
La Giardiniera drives through Rome as the Romans do!
