Las Terrazas - Eco Museum

Unbelievable, but in 2006 Cuba had the lowest ecological "footprint" in the entire world. How green can you be?
We do admit, the figures are from 2006. There was scarcity and the industry was so paralyzed by the North American embargo that it was hard to emit any CO2, but still! A coincidence? Not quite. Because as early as 1971, when the words ecology and sustainability were still a well-kept secret, Las Terrazas was created. At that time (part of the Sierra Rosario) a mountainous area an hour's drive west of Havana was being reforested. 5000 hectares of forest were laid out in terraces to prevent erosion. After having done the job, many workers stayed and build their homes in this serene environment.

Las Terrazas, a typical Cuban community project was established.

A model village in harmony with the environment. People joined in and today the village has more than 1000 inhabitants. The residents call their community an eco-museum. They are largely self-sufficient, thanks to tourism and small-scale ecological agriculture. Teachers settled down, a baker, a doctor. The village also attracts many artists, whose studios are regularly open to the public. Open House can also be found in the residence on the lake of the popular folk singer Polo Montañez, who died too young. There are relatively many restaurants, including El Romero and La Casa del Campesino. The village hotel, Hotel Moka, is one of the oldest examples of how the Cuban thought to tempt the (eco) tourist. It harmonizes modestly with a varied nature.

Las Terrazas is a small paradise for birdwatchers and nature photographers ...

... but also a green playground for the sporty traveler. There are walking routes (including to old French coffee plantations), rivers, waterfalls and beautiful places to swim, such as in the San Juan River. The Canopy (ZIP-line) is adventurous. Firmly anchored you float over Las Terrazas and its surrounding landscape.

And we also understand that there is something contradictory about it, with a classic car to a nature reserve, because that it is.

In 1985, Las Terrazas and the surrounding Sierra del Rosario National Park have been declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Think of it as a guilty pleasure. After this Drive you better understand why.

Included in the price:

  • Door to door transport, you will be picked up and brought home again.

  • 8 Hour Drive in an American Vintage Car with professional driver.

  • Visit to Las Terrazas.

Remarks & Suggestions

• We decided not to include the entrance fee. You better choose yourself. The entrance fee to the national park is USD 3 pp. However, if you want to swim in the San Juan River, you can pay USD 10 per person, which gives you access to the river and you can consume USD 8 in the restaurant there.

• Many people hire a local guide (USD 6 pp including cocktail and coffee). Who better to show you around in Las Terrazas than a local resident trained as a guide?

• Canopy (ZIP-line) can also be a nice option. (Well) tied to a cable you can see floating Las Terrazas from above. Prices vary from USD 10 to USD 25, depending on the number of tracks you want to zip.

• Hikers can go to the reception at Hotel Moka. There are various trails and they are under the guidance of a local guide. Costs vary between USD10 and USD 15 pp.

• Birdwatchers would do well to write to us in advance, given the often early departures.

• El Romero is a recommended restaurant for vegetarians, beautifully situated at the water, they cook with organic products and solar energy.

• La Casa del Campesino is a favorite restaurant. Lots of folklore and they serve delicious black beans.

• Choose the place where you want to have lunch, no worries about the driver, he will take care of his own meal.

• The mentioned prices may be subject to changes.

• A maximum of 4 people can be seated in the car.
